When It's Time for a Replacement

Slate comes from the shale family of stone. Shale is layers and layers of compressed stone and as it ages it reverts back to loosened layers of stone. As they age they dry out and become absorbant to moisture which accelerates the aging as the stone softens and breaks down.
When It Is Time For A Repair
Your roof should be inspected annually for broken and missing slate. Broken slate and repairs made by inexperienced roofers should be properly repaired.
